What are things that make Hyderabadis proud?

Hyderabad is a mix of cultures, just like Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, etc. Hyderabad was ruled by Nizams for a long time. The native language here is originally Urdu. You can look at the boards on every railway station in Hyderabad. You will find four languages. English, Hindi, Urdu and Telugu.

Based on which area in Hyderabad you are talking about, any of these four languages are spoken here.
If you go to Kukatpally area, it is filled with people who speak in Telugu. I'm not even talking about the regional Telangana slang. I'm talking about the Telugu you get to hear in Krishna and Godavari districts.
If you go to Old City, most of the people speak in Urdu.
In Jubilee Hills and Film Nagar, people speak in English the minute they get out of their homes.
But my favourite and the most commonly spoken slang in Hyderabad is called Hyderabadi. It is a mix of Urdu, Telugu, Telangana and Hindi. No other person who has not lived here can speak it with such fluency and pride. To get more exposure to the language, watch Angrez and Hyderabadi Nawabs. You can find them on youtube.
Some of my favourite slang words are:

  • Baigan (analogous to ghanta in North India)
  • Phatte (analogous to launde or chokre)
  • Maa ki kirkiri (means absolutely nothing, yet relieves frustration)
  • Kiraak (means awesome)
  • Chicha/mama/yaaron/miyaa/kaka (addressing your best friend using these is a must)
  • Paisan (read poison, the perfume!)
  • The plural form of anything ends with -an. (jootha/slipper=singular; joothaan=plural. haathan-pairan means hands and legs. Ticketaan=tickets, etc. )
  • Nakko (means no/don't)
  • Some words are compounded to form a fluent word (aata hoon becomes aataun. Chalta hoon becomes chaltaun, kar raha becomes karraa, le raha becomes leraa, etc.)
The best part is, you can customise the language to your needs! You can use Urdu, Telugu or Hindi to replace any word in a sentence and nobody would care.
On a sale day, we would see that Adidas tracks cost only rs. 400/-
We would go like this: "Zindagi mein nai milta yaaron adidas ki chaddi chaar sau ku!! kharid letaun!"
Or we would go like this: "Zindagi la dorakad kaka adidas chaddi chaar sau la. konesta!"
Both of them mean the same as this: "Never in life we can get a pair of Adidas shorts for Rs.400. I'm gonna buy them."
See? Once you get a hang of it, you can't let go of Hyderabad.
